This story is called Tigger Comes to the Forest. Are you ready? Let’s begin.
Winnie the Pooh woke up suddenly in the middle of the night and listened. A noise woke him up out of a sound sleep. He got out of bed, lit his candle, and stumped across the room to see if anybody was trying to get into his honey cupboard, but no one was there. So he stumped back again, blew out his candle, and got into bed. Then he heard the noise again. Is that you Piglet? But it wasn’t. Come in Christopher Robin! But Christopher Robin didn’t. Tell me about it to-morrow E ore, said Pooh sleepily. But the noise went on. Worraworraworraworraworra,’ said Whatever it was. When Pooh heard that, it scared him, and Pooh found that now he wasn’t sleepy at all.
‘What can it be?’ he thought. There are lot of noises in the Forest, but this is a so different. It isn’t a growl, and it isn’t a purr, and it isn’t a bark, and it isn’t the noise you make before beginning a piece of poetry. But it’s a noise of some kind, made by a strange animal! And he’s making it right outside my door. So I shall just get up, and ask whatever it is not to do it. Pooh was being very brave. So Pooh got out of bed, and opened his front door, and peeked out.
Hello! said Pooh, in case there was anything or anybody outside.
Hello!’ said Whatever it was.
Oh, said Pooh, Hello! Hello!
Oh, there you are! said Pooh as he looked around the other side of the tree where he lived.
Hello! Hello! said the strange animal, all the while wondering how long this was going to go on.
Pooh was just going to say hello for the fourth time when he thought that he wouldn’t, so instead he asked, Who is it?
Me, said a voice.
Oh! said Pooh. Well then, come here.
So Whatever it was came near Pooh, and in the light of the candle, he and Pooh just stopped and stared at each other.
I’m Pooh, said Pooh.
I’m Tigger, said Tigger.
Nice to meet you, said Pooh.
Tigger turned and started to walk away down the forest path.
Pooh and Piglet, who had been spending the night at Pooh’s house and was awakened by all the noise, walked slowly after him. And as they walked, Piglet said nothing because he couldn’t think of anything, and Pooh said nothing because he was thinking of a poem, as Pooh Bear usually does. And, when he had thought of a poem, he began.
What shall we do about poor little Tigger?
If he never eats nothing he’ll never get bigger.
He probably doesn’t like honey, or haycorns and thistles,
Because of the taste and because of the bristles.
And, all the good things which an animal likes,
Have the wrong sort of swallow or too many spikes.
He’s quite big enough anyhow, Piglet said.
He isn’t really very big, or at least he doesn’t seem so, said Pooh thoughtfully.
Then Pooh murmered,
But whatever his weight in pounds,
shillings, and ounces,
He always seems bigger because of his bounces.
And that’s the whole poem, Pooh said. Do you like it Piglet?
All except the shillings, said Piglet. I don’t think they ought to be there.
They wanted to come in after the pounds, explained Pooh, so I let them. It is the best way to write poetry, just letting things come. Oh, I didn’t know that, said Piglet.
Tigger had been bouncing in front of Pooh and Piglet all this time, turning around every now and then while asking, ‘Is this the right way to Kanga’s house? Finally, they came in sight of Kanga’s house, and there stood Christopher Robin right in front of it. Tigger rushed up to him and nearly knocked him over. Christopher Robin laughed.
Oh there you are Tigger!’ said Christopher Robin. I knew you’d be somewhere. I just didn’t know where to look for you.
I’ve been finding things in the Forest, said Tigger excitedly. I found a Pooh, and a Piglet, and an E ore, but I can’t find any food and I’m so hungry! I have an idea. Why don’t we all go back to Pooh’s house. He is a bear so I believe he should have some honey! What do you think Pooh?
Pooh looked at Piglet, bent down, and whispered into Piglet’s ear, Oh my. What am I to do? It appears that Tigger does like honey after all. I know what you need to do Piglet said. Tigger is our new friend. You need to share your honey with your new friend.
At that moment Pooh smiled, walked over to Tigger, and told him, Yes, you can come to my house to eat. We will have a splendid, delicious meal consisting of honey and bread. In fact you can all come over! So Kanga, Baby Roo, E Ore, Christopher Robin, Piglet, and Pooh walked the winding path through the forest back to Pooh’s house, except for Tigger who bounced all the way, and they all had a wonderful time that day while eating honey and bread.
Well that is the end of our story.
Be happy Little Ones, and do something nice for someone this week.
